Prolapsed Uterus

Western medicine- downward displacement of the uterus, usually as a result of weakening or stretching/tearing (during childbirth) of the supporting tissues.

It is divided into 3 degrees of severity.

1. cervix falls to pubis symphysis

2. can see cervix

3. uterus exits to external (procidentia)

Etiology (causes) of Prolapsed Uterus:

1. Qi - Qi sinking, Ren and Dai lose consolidation function.

2. KI Qi/Yang - can’t help Ren and Dai consolidate Uterus.

3. Chronic cough Secondary

4. Damp/Heat – Damp/Heat arises from other

Chinese Medicine Differentiation and Treatment

Spleen Qi deficiency 1st and 2nd degree prolapse, gets worse when tired. Plus – Qi sinking symptoms (see Appendix 1)

Principle of Treatment: – nourish Zhong Qi, ascend Spleen Qi

Acupuncture points – Moxa and needle, Du 20, Ren 4, 6, Gall bladder 28 (meeting hui of the Dai Mai), Stomach 36.

Herbal Medicine Formula: Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (increase dosage of Huang Qi, Dang Shen) add – Xu Duan (KI), Jin Ying Zi (astringent rosehips) Zhi Qiao (move Qi), Wu Mei (astringent)

Kidney Yang deficiency 2nd and 3rd degree prolapse, cold sore weak low back/knees Plus – Kidney symptoms (see Appendix 1)

Principle of Treatment: – strengthen KI, consolidate Uterus

Acupuncture points – Moxa and needle, Ren 4, Kidney 6 and 12 (lift Qi), Zigong - tinnitus, light headed- Du 20, Bladder 23 - weak sore back and/or knees- Bladder 23, Kidney 3

Herbal Medicine Formula: Da Bu Yuan Jian

Damp/Heat in low Jiao

Acupuncture points – sedate, Bladder 20 and Spleen 9 (damp), Liver 5 (heat), Ren 3 and Bladder 32 (diuresis) - bloating- Stomach 25, 36

Alternative Treatment Methods for Prolapsed Uterus: 

Ear Acupuncture- uterus, subcortex, sympathetic, LR, SP, Kidney injection- Dang Gui or vit B1, B12, in Liver 8, Bladder 23, daily for 7 days scalp- reproductive regions, foot motor sensory regions electrical- local points, points to direct the Qi upwards
