Nasal Congestion - acute rhinitis

Wind Cold - clear discharge with superficial wind cold symptoms

Herbal Formula: Xin Yi San

Wind Heat - yellow, thick discharge with superficial wind heat symptoms

Herbal Formula: Cang Er Zi San + Sang Jue Yin or Niu Bang Zi

Prevention - lots of outdoor exercises (no gym rats) and drink plenty of water.

  

Chronic Rhinitis

- usually due to deficiency of lung and spleen qi causing pathogenic factors toaccumulate in nasal cavity.

Lung Qi Deficiency - relates closely to weather changes, chronic nasal congestion, easily catch's colds, congestion aggravated by cold weather, clear nasal discharge

Herbal Formula: Ma Huang for nasal drip - effective Cong Er Zi San + modification (huang Qi, Dan She, Bai Zhu)

Spleen Qi Deficiency - relates closely to diet - chronic heavy nasal congestion with heavy phlegm symptoms, distended headache, frontal headache, discharge of frothy yellow phlegm (possible infection)

Herbal Formula: Ma Huang is no good for this diagnosis Shen Ling Bai Zhu San + Aromatic Herbs (Huo Xiang, Pei Lan)

Qi and Blood Stagnation - chronic nasal congestion, ameliorated during daytime activities alternating sides, scanty-sticky dry discharge with dry nose, throat and mouth, poor memory  

Herbal Formula: Tao Hong Si Wu Tang + modifications (Cang Er Zi, Xi Xin)

Allergic Rhinitis

- sneezing with clear discharge and possible cough

Lung and Spleen Qi Deficiency - dairy foods, mites, pollen, …

Herbal Formulas: Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang, Wen Fei Zhi Liu Dang

Kidney Deficiency - weather related, urinary disorders and a cold sensation within the body  

Herbal Formula: Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan + nasal herbs

Atrophic Rhinitis

- membrane of nose becomes dry (deficient fluids) due to environment (dusty, Mines, wood worker, hot temperatures)

Qi and Yin Deficiency - dry nose, itchy, painful, throat dryness

Herbal Formula: Yang Yin Qing Fei Tang

Lung and Kidney Yin Deficiency - more severe, unable le to smell, headache, deficient memory, strong odor inside nose, may be able to squeeze out green or yellow chunky chunks from nose
