Leslie Oldershaw discusses the use and risk of DHEA in fertility patients diagnosed with advanced maternal age and/or diminished ovarian reserve. She emphasizes the importance of having women tested for DHEA deficiency before prescribing it to avoid unwanted risk and negative impact on their fertility.
Leslie Oldershaw is a licensed acupuncturist, nutritionist, and herbalist providing comprehensive care integrating Eastern and Western medicine to best serve the needs of her patients. Having studied health and nutrition for over 30 years, Leslie earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1987 from the University of California at Berkeley, and her Masters degree in 1993 from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, with advanced training in womens health and fertility. Leslie is nationally board certified in acupuncture and licensed as a primary care provider by the State of California.
As an undergraduate completing a pre-med curriculum, Leslies academic focus was on a combination of biochemistry and ecosystems, thus cultivating an appreciation for the interactions that comprise a healthy, highly functional and dynamic living system. This foundation readily supported her study of the holistic paradigm of traditional Chinese medicine. Bringing the best of both worlds together for her patients, Leslie offers a blend of integrative medicine that consists of the holistic infrastructure offered by traditional Chinese medicine combined with modern Western medical science.
Leslies long-standing interest in womens health and endocrinology led her to specialize in fertility; she has since developed a solid reputation in the Bay Area for helping patients integrate acupuncture, nutrition, stress reduction, lifestyle counseling, and herbal remedies along with Western fertility treatments to achieve optimal fertility.
A prolific writer and engaging public speaker, Leslies passion for teaching has inspired numerous articles on the subjects of acupuncture, womens health, and fertility, and she frequently lectures on these subjects. Leslie maintains a private practice in Piedmont, California.

hysterectomy
Saving the uterus or one ovary of a young woman with early-stage ovarian cancer can preserve her fertility without compromising her survival, a new study has found.
Researchers at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons found that survival rates during the first five years following the cancer diagnosis were similar between women who had one ovary or their uterus spared and those who had a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or both ovaries removed.

DHEA in fertility and other issues
Thanks for this Lorne.
Is great to see this info starting to infiltrate out of naturopathy and into acupuncture . . ..
I listened to this great talk with interest as this is something I have been utilising, along with natural hormone replacement in my own life and that of patients for years – as most other hypothyroid (most patients) have adrenal fatigue at least. There are many great books on this – ‘Stop the Thyroid Madness – a patient revolution against decades of inferior thyroid treatment ‘ by Janie A Bowthorne is one, ‘Adrenal Fatigue – the 21st century Stress Syndrome’ by James L Wilson is another- there are heaps about and they dovetail well into TCM Kidney Yang deficiency ( especially the need to be in bed when the sun goes down – i.e. living according to the way of the Tao would sort most of this out) and our life style issues.
Lesley has not mentioned 7-KETO DHEA. COuld you ask her to comment? I know you can get DHEA from health food stores in your country - it is a banned substance inAustralia and we can only find it if we go off shore . .. but it i ssafer as 7 KETO . ..
I use this as it is a lot less likely to move about in the body to where we don't want it (testosterone).
I am stunned that some IVF doctors give it out without testing and in one case, it really tipped her over the edge - into full on cystic acne and as all the emotional RAGE that was festering found a fuel source . . . . chaos and no babies still . .
One woman was given it as a parting gift after IVF had not worked and she got pregnant the next month!!!
I use 7- Keto if their tests are not in mid range - and often this is all that is needed - in addition to everything else we may be doing concurrently -as everyone seems to be very impatient and not focussed on the global outcome - well mum, great pregnancy and stunning baby with a happy family at the end . ..
Also - adaptogens - I have found deer antler a great move.
In NZ there are many farms where the gel especially is very high grade. It is harvested under very humane conditions – with veterinary surgeons – and the animals are living well after wards . . .
There are many enterprises that send internationally - and I have found this a huge help, especially when everything else- including all the life style boxes have been ticked - it often raises the BBT enough - in the men - to allow much better sperm quality and libido. This is aftr all the exercise and dietary changes and going to bed a lot earlier and all of the supplements and BBT is STILL too low (36.6/8 for men in am).
I tend not to us it with the younger women, but deer antler works very well as a non DHEA source - and for those who wonder how to get 7- Keto - www.healthhouse.co.nz has a wealth of info on all sorts of useful supplements. AS does http://www.cervidor.co.nz/deer-velvet-health.html
