I'm sorry, this query is not quite TCM-related, but I am an acupuncturist and one of my patients is taking SAM-E for depression, has only recently started taking it, purchased it from the local health food store. I've done a bit of research and it's taken for depression AND osteo-arthritic pain...and not to be taken with any western anti-depressants. I guess I'd like to know more about this supplement and whether there are any contraindications to mixing it with TCM herbs. She's taking it once a day, in the morning only, as it lifts the mood and could interfere with sleep if taken later in the day.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
Anyone familiar with the non-TCM supplement SAM-E?

great question, I have found more and more of my patients are self medicating with natural supplements when they come into my office. It's difficult some times to see how they will interact.
What are the ingredients of this SAM-E product ?
We'll see if we can find the properties of this

Hi Ryan: Thanks for the reply. I found quite a few sites describing Sam-E, content, actions and indications, etc., but actually the easiest place to find it is at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam-E. I know one must take Wiki with a pinch of salt (!), but the contents are listed there.
I think one of my main concerns is that it is a mood lifter, though a "natural" one, and my patient is on low dose HBP medication, plus the usual diuretic, and she's elderly. But she does suffer from mild depression. The conditions I would like to treat her for are knee and back pain, some insomnia (even before the Sam-E) and a mild psoriasis-type skin condition...and the HBP.
