I thought I would Blog a little over my week of filming and learning with Dr Huang Huang and 30 other curious practitioners.
The course officially starts on Friday August 1st (Tomorrow at the time of this writing). But for me it began tonight. About 12 of us went out for dinner along with Dr. Huang Huang. Let see if I can remember their names (Andrea the translator who has been in Bei Jing that past 3 years, Dr Hunag' wife, Dr Huang, Andy Ellis who many may know from his books and Spring wind herbs.... by the way he is working with growers in China on growing organic herbs which is a good reason to support Spring Wind herbs, Sharon Weizenbaum who I am already grateful for not only organizing this seminar but also for including me in Dr Huang's welcoming dinner tonight, Sharon's boyfriend Peter, Jennifer who practices with Sharon, Jennifer's husband Ethan - they are newlyweds and Dr Huang was asked to give advice on how to make a marriage last .. if you are interested ask I can go into detail, Amy who has studies with Dr Huang before and also speaks and reads Chinese, jack who does some community acupuncture out of Sharon's clinic plus practices TCM elsewhere and Cara who was a chef in her past life and traveled by car from Philadelphia .

So I hope to share some clinical pearls from each day. Maybe some of the others will participate as well and some good tips.
I started to mention how the course began for me tonight before I impressed myself with remembering the names of everyone around the large table (at least I hope I got it right). He shared with us about treating teenage acne very well with Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan. many boys do not want to take it because the description talks about gynecological symptoms. He says clinically it works well for those who have the deep painful and purple acne in teenage years. I can go with that. The acne pattern he is describing sounds like blood stasis and Gui Zhi Fu Ling fits well. He shared how stress and facial tics and anxiety can be treated with it Wen Dan Tang.

My first impression i she is kind and gentle man that really cares and wants to share his knowledge. Should be a good week.

Gan Cao Dr Huang

I am writing on our lunch break of day one of our eight days with Dr. Huang Huang. The first I met was Stven from Chicago. Small world as his in laws live in British Columbia and he is visiting Vancouver (where I live and practice) in two weeks. I look forward to meeting up with him and showing him Acubalance

I was curious how in depth we would be going into herbs and formulas. Being the director of Pro D Seminars i get to see all kinds of seminars and I have to say this looks like it will be the most in depth study of herbs I have experiences. So Dr Huang spent the full morning going over Gan Cao. Over two and half hours on Gan Cao and using it in formulas. It is one of those things you have to be here to see how impressive and useful this information is. I can see already this is a very practical course for the clinician. You can apply this knowledge immediately in your clinic.

I do not know if you experience this like often do, but the more I meet these masters and surround myself with highly motivated practitioners (and Chinese reading practitioners the more I realize how little I know. There is so much history and depth to Chinese medicine it is really a life time of fun learning.

I will keep you posted as the week progresses.

Shang Han Lun and jin gui yao lue

I am on my second day in Dr Huang's class. Now that I am being fully immersed into the depth of knowledge of the Shang Han Lun I am more aware how "hot" this area is right now. I noticed all over the globe many non-Chinese practitioners are seeking out classes on the Shang Han Lun. Since we owe so much to Zhang Zhong Jing (ZZJ) I thought I would provide some Wikipedia info about ZZJ and the works he left for us all. Just in case you are like me and ave been living under a rock and missed out on the importance of his work.

Zhang Zhongjing (simplified Chinese: 张仲景; traditional Chinese: 張仲景; pinyin: Zhāng Zhōngjǐng; Wade-Giles: Chang Chung Ching), formal name Zhang Ji (simplified Chinese: 张机; traditional Chinese: 張機; pinyin: Zhāng Jī, 150 - 219), was an Eastern Han physician and one of the most eminent Chinese physicians during the later years of the Eastern Han. He established medication principles and summed up the medicinal experience up until that time, thus making a great contribution to the development of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

[edit] Biography

Though extremely well known in modern Chinese medicine and considered one of the finest Chinese physicians in history very little is known of his life.[1] According to later sources he was born in Nanyang, held an official position in Changsha and lived from approximately 150 to 219AD.[2] Exact dates regarding his birth, death and works vary; an upper limit of 220AD is generally accepted.[3]

During his time, with warlords fighting for their own territories, many people were infected with febrile disease. Zhang's family was no exception. He learned medicine by studying from his townsfellow Zhang Bozu, assimilating from previous medicinal literature, and collecting many prescriptions elsewhere, finally writing the medical masterpiece Shanghan Zabing Lun' (traditional Chinese: 傷寒雜病論; pinyin: Shānghán Zábìng Lùn, lit. "Treatise on Cold Pathogenic and Miscellaneous Diseases"). Shortly after its publication the book was lost during wartime. Due to Zhang's contribution to Traditional Chinese medicine he is often regarded as the sage of Chinese medicine.

Zhang's masterpiece, Shanghan Zabing Lun, was collected by later people and compiled into two books, namely the Shang Han Lun (傷寒論, lit. "On Cold Damage"), which was a discourse on how to treat epidemic infectious diseases causing fevers prevalent during his era, and the other, highly influential doctrine Jinkui Yaolue (金櫃要略, lit. "Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Coffer"), a compendium of his clinical experiences. These two texts have been heavily reconstructed several times up to the modern era. [4] Revered for authoring the Shāng Hán Zá Bìng Lùn, Zhang Zhongjing is considered to have founded the Cold Damage or "Cold Disease" school of Chinese medicine and is widely considered the seminal expert to this day.

Shang Han Lun with Arnaud Verluys

Thanks for letting us know about another Shang Han Lun Seminar.
Pro D Seminars has been branding itself as only offering courses by top practitioners. We only work with high level practitioners/teachers so you can feel confident you are receiving high quality information. Please note Pro D is not organizing this seminar BUT I have heard positive feedback about Arnaud Verluys teachings. So this is really unbias. One delegate here at Huang's seminar shared her rave reviews of his seminars. According to her he is the real deal.

Just thought I would share this info with those who are hearing about his seminar for the first time in keeping with the spirit of Chinese Medicine Tools... to Share grow and connect.

If anyone else has studies with Arnaud Verluys please share your experience.

Arnaud Versluys

Arnaud is doing a seminar series with Dan Bensky and Craig Mitchell and seems to be considered their equal.

I attended in Boulder last winter...all 3 were fantastic and many prominent practitioners were in attendance and taking copious notes.
here's a link about their seminars

Huang Huang Study Group

There have been lots of talk about meeting online to continue our studies of what we have been learning with Dr. Huang. I will set up a private group for us. Anyone who went to Nan Jing and did not attend this seminar can also join. Also, if you get your hands on the distance learning version of this course you can also join the group. We can put up notes here, studies, case studies and have forum discussions. Plus CMT will be launching a video chat here so we can meet live on line and see each other while we chat about cases. It will look like the Brady Bunch. So I will do my best to invite all who are participating this week. It will be private (if I do it right) so only those who have been invited can have access. Let me know if you want to be a moderator who can allow approve request of those wanting to join.

Great experience at Huang's 8 day program

Last day with Dr Huang

The eight days passed by quickly. I have lots to think about when I return to clinic. I really see the benefit of immersing you self for a week or more in intensive studies. It is has been far superior in learning than the common weekend courses we usually do. Dr Huang has really opened my eyes about the classics and how important it is to be very familiar with the Shang Han Lun. I have spent 8 days with very experienced and high level practitioners. The fact they have been using his style of diagnosis and prescribing formulas has given me the courage and confidence to step outside what I am comfortable with and to incorporate what I have learned.

There should be or will be a video of an interview with Dr. Huang and Victoria Conran (acupuncturist from England) explaining more about his methods.

Sharon Weizenbaum of White Pine Healing Arts has been the most gracious host. I look forward to hosting her in Vancouver when she comes to teach a two day seminar on PCOS and weight loss. Amherst is a very cool and hip community. Most of the restaurants we frequented used locally grown food. Even the Amherst Chinese restaurant has their own farm where they grow most of their own vegetables. So if you are in the area check out Amherst Chinese food, Black Sheep Deli and bakery and Tabella’s (great find Jocelyn!!).

I look forward to more lively discussion on the Huang Huang private study group. Thanks to everyone for making this a great experience for me. I wish you all a safe trip home and the best of success in your personal and professional lives. I hope to see you at some of the Pro D Seminars in the near future and show off all that Vancouver has to offer (host of the 2010 winter Olympics)
