Tongue signs

Hi Bob,
I have come across a few tongue signs that I have had a hard time finding info on. One is brownish colored, non-raised spots on the tip, trailing off to the edges of the anterior third of the tongue.

Another one, which I come across more frequently, are large swollen papula on the very back of the tongue. These are often not red, but just very large. I know that having larger papula on the back of the tongue is normal to a degree. I am just not sure at what point it indicates a pathology.

Thanks for any insights!

Pictures are worth a 1000 words !

Hey Eric

Is there any way you could post a few pictures of the tongue you are describing. I have found it much easier to diagnose a tongue via quality pictures than by verbal description !

Any change of getting a couple pics of the tongue you describe?

Ryan

Pictures

Hey Ryan,

I wish I did have a picture, but I am not currently seeing the patients. I have often thought about keeping some digital files of patient tongues. With a forum like this, a picture could generate some real helpful advise.

Papules on tongue roots

From my understanding, papules on the root of the tongue indicate damp retention (lower jiao) and the size is relative to the amount. (larger=more dampness). I do believe that this tongue can also be normal.
