I have a female patient who came to me because her tongue grows roots!? She has documented pictures over the last year, however the quality is too poor to post. They are growing at the very root of her tongue longitudinally down the center. These roots become very long, wide, and will reach a height of 2cm or more. On one occasion they have grown to touch the back of her throat when she swallows. Her M.D has repeatedly prescribed antibiotics for Candida. However, this has only created more dampness, and has done nothing for the roots on her tongue. I always try to correlate symptoms to a female's menstrual cycle, and so far these roots appear to show up during the follicular phase and progressively grow as ovulation nears. I have not seen this patient long enough to determine if they change during her luteal phase. This patient presents with a severely mixed pattern, predominantly Liver Dep. Stag., Bld Stasis, Damp Acc, and Sp Qi Vacuity. However, the blood and yin have also been affected. Her tongue is a blue/grey and very enlarged, the coat is thin greasy white in the back and thin white from center to tip, and the sub lingual veins are very thick and dark. Any suggestions on what underlying pattern may be causing the growth of these "roots" as I have not seen this before?
Thanks!
