Main Actions for Er Miao San

The functions of this TCM herbal formula is two clear heat and dry dampness.  The formula is best suited for conditions where there is damp heat stagnated in the lower jiao.  Depending on where the damp heat is lodged within the lower jiao will give vastly different symptoms.  Damp heat in the sinews and bones will give rise to lower back soreness and lower joint pain while damp heat in the genital region gives rise to foul smelling leukorrhea and urinary disorders.

Indications and Symptoms for Er Miao San

scanty, yellow urine, lower back pain, lower extremities pain, weakness or atrophy of lower extremities, red hot swollen painful joints (lower joints), thick yellow foul smelling vaginal discharge (leukorrhea), lower limb sores due to dampness

Tongue – yellow greasy coat

Medicinal Ingredients of Er Miao San

Huang Bai   (Cortex Phellodendri, Amur Cork-tree Bark, Phellodendron) - 9-12g.

-drains damp heat in the lower jiao

Cang Zhu   (Rhizome Atractyloids, Atractylodes (black) Rhizome) - 6-9g.

-dries dampness

Preparation Instructions of Er Miao San

This natural medicine formula should be fried before being ground into a powder and taken 2 times per day with ginger juice.  The normal dosage today is between 3 and 6 grams.

Additional Points on Er Miao San

This herbal formula is commonly used as the foundation for many other formulas which drain damp heat from the lower burner.  Some common modifications of Er Miao San are San Miao Wan (Three Marvel Pill), Si Miao Wan (Four Marvel Pill) and Jia Wei Er Miao Wan (Augmented Two Marvel Pill)). 

When the appropriate symptoms are present Er Miao San is able to treat such diseases as urinary tract infections, vaginitis, cervicitis, hepatitis, beriberi, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, and gonococcal arthritis.
