Stop Smoking Protocol

Now we all know that stop smoking treatments aren't as simple as they sound, but there is one thing that is common and that is using the NADA addiction treatment protocol. Now this was briefly touched on during my training, but I'm sure there were a few things that I've forgotten.

Now I know that the 5 points used in the ear are sympathetic, shen men, kidney, liver, and lung.

Here's where my question gets complicated.

For stop smoking protocols there is an additional point that is used called the 'stop smoking point' located on the wrist at the apex of the edge of the radius (close to LU7). Generally points to support the lung energy, such as LU1 and LU9, are used as well, along with any other body points specific to the person's imbalances presented.

Are there any other points specifically used in stop smoking treatments that I'm missing out? Also is there a special treatment setup that you're supposed to follow ie: once a week, twice a week, every other day? Should ear seeds be used all the time? or even Dermal needles?

I've told my patients that they have to want to stop smoking or else it won't work. The acupuncture is to help them work through the cravings so they cut back on the number of cigarettes they smoke and eventually don't smoke at all. But if they continue to give into the cravings and smoke, it won't work.

There are other factors involved too - habitual smoking, associated smoking, stress levels, mental/ emotional triggers - all of which need to be addressed to get over the whole "I want/ need a cigarette" thing.

So apart from the NADA points and stop smoking point, and supportive points to a person's specific imbalances, is there any particular points that are supposed to be used in a stop smoking protocol?

I've been unsuccessful with the last two patients, and I'm working on a third and hoping it doesn't turn out that way either. Help! Suggestions?

The power of group sessions

All the data that I have seen shows that conducting the NADA protocol in a group session works best.

Consider having a "smoking cessation" group that you treat all at once.

Good luck!  I can certainly empathize with you.  It is frustrating when you want to help someone and nothing seems to work. ~ Diane

NADA

 Hi,

When I have somebody call me for stopping smoking, I always doins an evaluation over the phone first. Ask why the person want to smoke, try to feel if that person is really ready to stop or they think it is a miracle we are doing.

Then I ask the person to stop smoking the first day of the treatment. I suggest a book call "Allen's Carr easy way to stop smoking". That book is cheap, simple and most people who read it till the end said it help them.

The NADA is a very good protocol, I do use it whit drugs and alcohol also.

The point you mentioned near 7P is call "Tinmee" . You can also add Ying Xiang which help with the odor, they really smell the tobaco and they can feel the bad smelling of it.

But my experience is that it will have a good success if the patient is really ready to quit, if not they will find every reason to start again.

Good Luck!

stop smoking protocol

Hi. I was taught that moxa on Ren 17 makes the cigarette taste foul in the mouth and thus reduces desire. I have tried this in clinic and it has worked. I also combine the Acupuncture with strategies to deal with triggers, affirmations, hand to mouth reflex and a "smokers diet" herbal formula by Cathay Herbal. Not sure if it's available where you are.

Hope this helps.

stop smoking protocol

Hi. this is their website http://www.cathayherbal.com.au/

the smokers diet is misspelt but is item #272 on page 8 in their 'herbal range' section. unfortunately it doesn't give info re the formula but you could contact them for details.

I have always used this formula in combination with NADA, the extra quit smoking point, moxa Ren17, affirmations, giving them ideas other than picking up a ciggie for hand to mouth reflex (e.g - snacking on nuts n trail mix, knitting etc) and have had reasonable success. I also use the 'tobacco' phenolic available from Healthworld / Metagenics to assist with spot cravings. their website is http://www.healthworld.com.au/

hope this helps.

STOP SMOKING

For moxa on Ren 17 I would used one of the many little gadgets that are available on numerous websites which will hold loose moxa and will sit quite happily over the point.  They can get a little hot so you do have to be careful.

Personally, I have not had any success with smoking cessation because I also ask the question "Do you really want to stop" and explain why I ask.  Most people don't so either they don't think I'm any good (hopefully not) or they really don't want to give up!   For those who are trying - good luck!
