Drug/Herb Interactions-OCP

Just wanted to see if anyone had experience with herbs making the oral contraceptive pill (OCP), or any hormonal birth control -- less effective.  Before you laugh, here are some links about St. John's Wort:

Scroll down to the Drug Interaction section of these 2 sites.

This study on pubmed shows that 300 mg of St. John's Wort taken 3x/day induces liver enzyme P450 and affects blood level hormones...any herb could have this effect as well, so maybe we should consider this and request that patients take herbs at different times of the day from when they take the OCP.

Drug/Herb interactions- OCP

OCP's are decreased in effectiveness by concurrent use of antibiotics and antihistamines, anticonvulsants and some analgesics. My drug reference states there are known concerns with St. John's wort, alfalfa, black cohosh, chaste tree, and saw palmetto. I assume these are listed more from popularity than exhaustive herbal review.

I have never had a specific problem with interactions with OCP but I always warn patients not to trust their contraceptive pills when I prescribe strong heat clearing, dispersing ( resolve exterior) or blood moving formulas.
