Cellulite

Hello, I was wondering if you anyone can help me. I am an acupuncture student
currently and I wanted to know what treatment would you recommend for
treating cellulite. I would imagine its the result of dampness in the
spleen, so I would think that you would tonify the spleen as well as it
could be an issue with phlegm in which case I would use points such as ST
40.

I am still new to acupuncture so I hope that what I am asking here makes
sense. I have been battling cellulite since I was in my early 20's  ( i am 29 now)and I have always been athletic and I eat very healthy. I do have a spleen
deficiency and I have been doing acupuncture using SP 6 and LI 4. I was
just wondering if anyone can suggest anything for treating cellulite.

Thank you,

Kalina

Hi Kalina,

Probably you should give more details regarding your constitution, to establish a differential diagnostic.  However, as far as I know and see in my practice, for cellulite treatment, in addition to acupuncture we should also explore the benefits of tuina massage, herbs and medicated diet.  At least 50% of cellulite is related to life style.

-         There are few patterns related to weight management (I identified about 11 such patterns) that lead to some herb formulas.

-         Also the gynecological elements (period related) are very helpful to address any hormonal imbalances.

-         Tuina and warm cupping massage can help to unlock mechanically the small fat deposits and dissolving them.  After every shower you should use self massage for the cellulite areas (using some lotions containing horse chestnut)

-         The diet should be closely observed and adjusted.  I would suggest attention on consumption of dairy products (especially from cow milk), wheat, large quantities of raw food (salads, fruits, etc), meat, sweets, etc.

Food quantities

50–80%: Grains form the main share of a healthy diet in Chinese dietetics, for example corn, barley, millet, oats, rice, spelt, wheat

30–40%: Cooked vegetables, for example carrots, potatoes, fennel, beans, cabbage, greens, legumes (beans and lentils).

5%: Meat, for example beef, lamb, game, also poultry, or even better fish, because it is easier to digest and develops less dampness.

5%: Raw foods, salads, fruit should make up only a small portion of the overall diet; more during the summer.

TCM recommends the intake of only small amounts of liquid (yin) during meals. Excess liquid drowns the stomach’s digestive fire. The major share of the daily intake of liquids should be consumed between meals.

Tai-chi and/or qigong energy exercises (as well as meditations on a daily basis) with the mind focused on the emotion balance and reshape our body would also help. Remember: “imagination leads the mind and the mind leads the qi”.  Be kind with you and implement a change at a time.

It is true the acupuncture needle is very important, bot only connected to the other TCM elements.

 Best regards,

Dan

cellulite . . .

Hi - the bane of most women - with low thyroid function.

To save yourself  a lot of hassle - maybe Chinese herbs and TCM is NOT the easiest answer???

Go to www.stopthethyroidmadness.com  and www.thyroidpower.com and also anything writen by Dr John A Lee and see if you fit into any of the criterion - I remember teaching third year acupuncture students over 15 years ago and put up all my own personal S & S on the whilte board - and it was quite comical trying to get TCM to work it through - BUT was total low thyroid and DHEA and adrenal dysfunction - which YES there are Kidney and Spleen Yang and Blood Yin and Kidney Yin and JIng deficiencies.. .BUT is often that we need a different hat on.

Why else would be have to learn all that biomedicine if to not use it sometimes??

So in answer to the cellulite -  often our bodies store fluid to do something about the extra FIRE that is there -(also PCOS)  think naturopatically toxins and often the thyroid (around in circles here) is disrupted due to the toxins stored away - and here we could look very sternly at dental amalgams and vaccinations and the thus allopathic and homeopathic doses of all the many heavy metals and other wastes in the global recycled food chain that we have no biological need of - so they are stored in our fat cells and hence are toxic/hot, so water accumulates internally to act as a buffer - so then something that REMOVES the toxins may well be the way to treat this - and herbs and needles sometimes are secondary to drinking more water, slepeing earlier, breathing deeper, having more down-time/fun and shock/horror - even scheduling in orgasms . . .

To get rid of toxins?
More water and organic may help - so also you can do more systemic things to pull out what is lurking - and again - TCM may not be the answer for cellulite -  I have been teaching acup for over 28 years - when we used to be more wholistic/naturopathic and embedded in this culture - not biomedicine - so possibly looking outside the TCM and standard orthodox medical dogma may assist you and also future patients  .  . I use whatever model that works . . .

Often we need to treat ourselves as a good practitioner would  ask searching questions/be a sleuth . .  .the body doesn't stuff up for NO reason . . .  What happened prior to getting the cellulite? Going on the contraceptive pill/implants??? using lots of alcohol - self medicating for something that upset you?

If you are keen on using acupuncture, you will need to jump into a model that is wholstic - and TCM acupuncture is about organ pathology - and you don't usually see it as we get seduced into what looks logical - but only having one model - and one that was not in the classics is not - as most patients/any of us are all the walking wounded from channel distortions or/and broken heart and/or toxic residues - when not lifestyle and/or slothful choices .  . .

Possibly looking at five element work would help you more?  Colon and metal in general - lung and grief/Tai Yin connection???Or the Stems and Branches (not open points) work as per Dr van Buren offered at www.shokanten.com? Looking to Gall Bladder cleanses - or taking something to allow the gut to work as designed - possibly just using good gut flora . . . .???

The beauty of our medicine is that it CAN accomodate all options - and stil be valid - there is no 'wrong' . . .as we are all so very different. So hope something there takes your fancy . . .. the Spleen is indicated directly or indirectly in just about everything that potentially 'goes wrong' (the Liver goes off and attacks/insults it and anything upsets the liver . . .) .

Hi Kalina,

As you move forward with your TCM studies, it is most important to remember that all TCM treatment is based on Pattern Discrimination. Once you have found the Pattern from your 4 Examinations, you design a treatment plan.

I agree with the first practitioner who commented (sorry I don't remember name) who gave you such detailed suggestions. Use all the information you can gather from your patient, look at diet, lifestyle etc., Chinese herbal medicine...

My book, Chinese Medicine & Healthy Weight Management An Evidence-based Integrated Approach, covers numerous potiential patterns and treatment strategies.

Women who do, or do not, have Dx's thyroid problems may or may not have cellulite. If the case does have a medical Dx of throid problems, you can still treat this via TCM pattern Dx/Tx. The patient may still need Pharma Rx to treat thryoid probs...but that is a different discussion.

Feel free to contact me off list of you have further questions.
