My mother aged 54, suffers from depression and peri-menopausal symptoms. There is no apparent cause for her to be depressed as all is well in my family. My sister and I are well settled. My father is in great health and has a good job. Early symptoms of depression started showing up about three years back. Sessions with the counselor have not helped much. She has been on anti-depressant drugs for quite sometime now. However, I wish there could be some way out to assist her to regain her enthusiasm for life.
Suffering from depression and peri-menopausal symptoms.
I am sorry to hear about your mom! Yes, I would be concerned for your mum also. There are alternative therapies for people suffering from depression and peri-menopausal symptoms. Have you heard of http://www.lonstein.com/ ? It is a site on the internet, which promotes good health and well-being for women. It explains a new method of creating Chiropractic & Acupuncture to bring about long lasting change in your life. The website has more information and explains the process and how many sessions!
You should see a qualified Chinese medicine practitioiner.
Peri-menopausal and menopausal symptoms are EASILY treated with Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan, a Chinese patent herbal medicinal formula that gives fast lasting results.
No big deal,... ever.

Unfortunately peri-manopause / menopause is one name for what may be a multi-faceted pattern. I do not dispute the use of Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan (知æŸåœ°é»ƒä¸¸), although this is oversimplifying what can be and usually is a multi-faceted pattern and to claim one remedy is the 'solution' to all is a gross oversimplification. SO...really there is no one simple answer / formula to what can be a very complex pattern(s) and there is no "one size fits all" answer.
Hi Rither,
How great is it that you have enough concern about your mother to post here. Aside from different treatment plans that can be used (and are very helpful) we must, as family members remember that each person has their own view of their life. Simply because the overall picture "looks good" does not mean that it is interpreted by the person in question in the same fashion. The time around menopause is a transition from fertility to creativity and it is likely that your mother has not yet found a way to take advantage of her creative side, or even appreciate it. Seeing that one of her functions on this earth (creating caring children! :)) has been fulfilled, she may not know what to do next. This is very common in a world where we are taught to believe that math and science are of utmost importance.
I think that treatment by a qualified acupuncturist/herbalist is a great place to start. It may help her open up some channels in her life that she wasn't aware that she had. It will boost her mood and possibly give her the impetus to create something new in her life. This could be as simple as a recipe and as complicated as a full dance or art course.
I wish your family the best of everything, this is just some food for thought!

i don't know if you are a tcm practitioner but at 40 you have half of your kidney yin by 49 a lot less, and that little bit left has got to last you another 50 years- in this 100 years we've been given. yin and yang are mutually interdependant. it is not uncommon for women in their forties or fifties to suddenly get depressed as their kidney yang is often depleted with adequate rest and herbs etc this can be well replenished so the next 50 years can be dynamic and fulfilling- by the time you've got your kids here and got a roof over your head your half way there, now no more bleeding and children it is a second spring but most hard working individuals will need to put oil and petrol if they wish to continue healthily. i see all the time peole who get to half way between 40 and 60 and then dwindle. so you need to evaluate kidney yin and yang especially. But just as important mid life is liver time, sluggishness, so liver first needs to be regulated and that is also done through the spleen (functional tonification also esential). Lets face it who isn't fatigued by 50 so sp, lv and kidney. i have four kids, built my own house and see 50-85 clients a week, i get knackered-thank god for chinese herbs!!!
Hi,
We must remember how much diet can be medicine. Hormone related depression can be viewed in TCM as a change in the body's ability to process improper food. For example, if one's Kidney and Spleen Yang and Yin are sufficient daily coffee and moderate sugar consumption may make no perceptible difference in mood but once menopause changes the body and Yin and Yang decline then daily coffee suddenly becomes too hot and drying and the sugar becomes too damp and creates brain fog. Certainly a depressing combination. Qi will stagnate more easily. We can correct these effects with medicinals but must remember to counsel about proper eating habits and lifestyle to minimize a recurrence of symptoms.

I like Shiao Ting Jing's video on the Liver's role in menopause too.

just remeber the nature of liver is rigid. after the empty fire is out, (that is in fact the yang of liver), at this time, no matter how much you nourish the yin and clear the empty fire, and the escaping yang is not calming. so only when you can guide the yang back to interact with the nourished yin, it can work.
you can leave your detail case in my blog. www.uhealing.com
As it stands, it may be either: Heart since heart effects the Shen of a person and his mind and also interacts with emotions. Then theres Liver and also Kidneys, here it could also be a Yang as well as a Yin deficiency or a combination of more patterns.
However I see only 2 ways to solve this: 1st and best see a TCM practioner or find someone who at least can tell you your symptoms and which organs are unbalanced. second would be u could try a variety of herbs, for example starting with heart cooling herbs and see how it works, if that doesnt work u may try heart yang herbs, then u go for the liver etc. However i dont recommend this since u can do a lot of damage when medicating wrong. So u should actually first know whats the problem, if u do than u can think for a treatment.
Please have her thyroid checked.
I agree that this is a liver issue, but with already thyroid complication.
Hi - I would suggest getting DHEA levels checked - and then if she is not in the middle of the range supplementing with 7 - Keto DHEA - not the regular stuff available. We make metabolic and reproductive hormones from this.
Also - Magnesium and B and Zinc - and getting the book 'Thryoid Power' by Richard and Karalee Shames from Amazons or similar as it will answer all her questions.
There is usually a nutritional or environmental medicine component in everything people show up with - so using OUR context is a great start to not just helping them, but being inclusive/appearing very knowledgeable adn ueffective as we are in the western model here.
Progesterone cream used half the month is amazing for many of us in this life changing transitional zone . ..as there is far too much estrogenisation about (see www.ourstolenfuture.com).
From there and only then, I swould start thinking Chinese medicine - as calming the Shen and building Ki Jing/yin/yang/blood and supporting the middle heater are all dependent on a few over-riding issues as mentioned above - all of us are still living life far too busy to actually allow the time to naturally heal well.
The magor issue for most women is actually the rage well stored away. The heat generated there undercuts a great deal of support we would otherwise be able to give them Hence I use Liver 2 with everyone just about . .. no stimulation though on anything I insert. .There is a whole protocol that I have made available in my DVD sets/web semars that will be more 'out there' soon . ..
All the best
A fellow 54 yo woman . ..
