DVD Review - Kiiko Matsumoto (Part 1)

I was lucky enough today to have some time with a Kiiko Matsumoto DVD. For those of you who know who Matsumoto Sensei is, you know already know how great this must have been. For those of you who dont, it was!

Matsumoto Sensei is a Japanese acupuncture practitioner who studied under very famous teachers such as Yoshio Manaka, and at this point, is a master herself. Her system of acupuncture, as she practices it, has a strong Japanese bent. Although it is based off of the classics of Shan Han Lun, Nan Jing, Nei Jing and the Su Wen. Its well known that Matsumoto loves oriental medicine theory, but she is famous (like many Japanese practitioners), for her very hands on practical approach. In her DVD, this was immediatly apperant. (She has a great sense of humor as well!).

I thought I would mention just first about the first 1/3rd of the DVD while it was still fresh in my mind.

The DVD is titled "Introduction to Constitutional Treatments and Gynecology". It is avaliable from Pro-D Seminars , distance education courses.

While it is titled Constitutional Treatments and Gynecology, the first 1/3rd is mostly about:

  • post surgery
  • post cancer
  • thyroid disease
  • treatment of scars
  • abdomenal diagnosis.
  • the immune system

For anyone who is treating any of these conditions, I couldnt reccomend this DVD more. This is also a DVD for those looking to introduce a few of the basics of abdomen diagnosis into there treatment style. This DVD only works, as a DVD. What I mean by that, is that you have to see to believe it, or see to learn how to do it. By book or audio only, is really not enough. Kiiko keeps everything as hands on as possible, so you can learn the treatment as she goes.

My only complaint about this video, is that at times, it can be a little hard to follow for those who are not fimilar with her system of treatment. Making sure that you know your 5 element points before watching will probably help. (Ie, what is the water point of the Bladder meridian, etc). However, if you keep your eyes, ears and mostly importantly your mind, there is alot to be learned here.

One last goody in the first 1/3rd is what Matsumoto calls the "the gummy point" or "gum point". This is more commenly known in the west as "The Naganos Points". These points are located right between the Large Intestine meridian and the TB meridian around LI 10 and LI 11. Again, seeing the video can really help clear up some conception about the location and use of these points.  Some sources talk about there being four specific points, but Matsumoto treats them more as a reflex area, looking for the most reactive point within the area itself.

As I get farther into the DVD, ill post another update.

Eric

Kiiko Foundations

By all means, go with whoever you are most comfortable with. This is a tremendous system that, in my experience, is impressively suitable and effective for most modern-day patients we encounter. It also goes a long way to awaken some of your clinical senses that are not very well engaged with standard TCM approaches. That is hugely important to your development as a practitioner and as a person. The most important thing is that as many people (practitioners and patients) benefit from it as possible. My training was largely with David Euler. I benefited from a very comprehensive, clearly articulated and systematic coverage of the entire system over a year with him and have since supplemented with numerous workshops with Kiiko (and Kawai, one of her teachers) - and applying the system to thousands of patients over 10 years (it amounts to about 80% of what I do with patients, diagnostically and therapeutically). The important thing is that you get a very sound, clear and systematic coverage of the basics. I will add that prior to being an acupuncturist, I acquired over 10 years of post-secondary teaching experience through teaching at the University and College level. Daniel Schulman

KIIKO STYLE

Hi carol,

Those dayes were suggested after Kiiko was here in Vancouver BC. It was for david Euler to come to vancouver which fell through.

Currently we are working with abother one of her proteges, Wendy Yu, to teach a course in vancouver. She is just working on getting permission from Kiiko. This is her material and it is my understanding none of her students would teach her material without her permission. So Wendy is working on it. I am not sure if Daniel has her permission. We are trying to organize a date for March right now with Wendy.

For now I agree with Daniel about checking for and treating oketsu, immune and adrenal. I would also add testing for sugar sensitivity too. I am just starting to get into her style and I am looking forward to taking a Kiiko basic class from any of those qualified (david, Wendy or Daniel). Until then I am using her text book and DVD.

Three weekend course

Hello Daniel,

Thank you for the quick reply and your advice. I would be very interested in a three weekend course but it may be tricky because you are in Canada and I in the States (Rhode Island Area) The potential is there to muster up a small group of dedicated people which I would be happy to look into. How should we proceed?

Integrating Kiiko

Hi Carol. So glad to hear you are pumped on Kiiko. A few thoughts. First of all, really really stick with the basics - for starters that means checking for and treating oketsu, immune and adrenal on everyone you can over and over and over - then slowly layer other assessments and treatments on top of that - that is how I would proceed. But there is NO substitute for having a good teacher of the basics, in a very systematic fashion - it is greatly superior to trying to do it from the book and catching the odd workshop. And guess what, I have put together a solid 3 weekend course on Kiiko basics (over a year) - its thorough, comprehensive and guaranteed to really get the basics down. So, I don't know where you are located but if you can get a small group together, we could talk about it if you are interested. I have a brochure I can email you. And the cost depends on numbers and travel costs involved. Daniel Schulman

Kiiko and Dr Huang

I too am impressed with Kiiko's style. After taking courses from both Sharon Weizenbaum and Brand Horn/Wendy Yu and saw how they incorporated Kiiko's style I was sold. Since Kiiko's recent course in Vancouver I have been slowly implementing her style by using her two text books (need to order directly from Kiiko) along with her DVD as my study guide. I hear taking David's classes is incredibly helpful but thus far I cannot get to any of his future presentations so I am doing it on my own as mentioned above with her text books andDVD.

I see my practice evolving using Kiiko style of acupuncture and Dr Huang Huang (Shang Han Lun scholar) style of herbal medicine. I am sure these two teachers are worthwhile modeling in clinic as I know both teachers have had a great influence on Sharon Weizenbaum's style of practice which I have bene very impressed with.

Kiiko's work

Hello Daniel,

you posted that you studied with David Euhler @ NESA for 1 year and then spent the next 8 years implementing Kiiko\'s work into you clinic practice. I recently had one class with Kiiko and the next day implemented some of what I learned into my practice with surprisingly good results. I was so enlightened by her style of work and how she approaches clients; all I want to do is study kiiko!

Can you give any advice to someone just starting out what priorities to keep in line. Is there a flow to the work that follows with practice?

Thank you,

Carol

Seminar

Seems like she and her husband will be here in Vancouver some time in the near future doing a seminar. It was just announced by http://www.prodseminars.com/ that something is in the works. I think her books are a good place to start to. I really enjoyed 5 elements 10 stems. Alot to think about there.

Kiiko Matsumoto training

Hi Tim

Came across this blog whilst surfing the web..... I have studied and practised KM style acupuncture for about 4 yrs now and completed her 1 yr intensive foundation course in the UK with her UK senior teacher and have also attended most of her seminars
in London. I have the dvd and don't really rate it, which is a shame but the sound quality is'nt very good, there's no voice over to describe whats being said in the background, or a run through of a patients diagnosis so one is just left watching Kiiko treat.

This would be difficult for a beginner to understand what's going on...basically it's just a copy of a seminar and not really professionally done. The book, her seminars and proper foundational training are more important and useful for a practising acupuncturist.

Go to her seminars or her husbands and you'll learn more than any dvd....thats my experience anyway.

Gudday mate!

Buying the video now.. Maybe..

I'm a Kiiko-style wannabe from Australia. I haven't managed to study with her, but I did get a copy of "Kiiko Matsumoto's Clinical Strategies.." which I use all the time. I've been applying the treatments described for about three years now and have found them to be absolutely fantastic.

I am very keen to talk with anyone who has an interest in, or has studied, Ms. Matsumoto's treatment style - I would like to get some of her DVD's for my Continuing Education requirements.. I have a question, though - I know the basic Oketsu, Immune, Adrenal Exhaustion, Thyroid and Trauma treatments - all the primary things in the book - Is this video set the best choice for a not-total beginner, or would some other video be better?

Thanks for posting the review..

Tim..

Eric, If you ever have any

Eric,

If you ever have any questions about Kiiko's style of acupuncture, feel free to ask me. I graduated from the New England School of Acupuncture where she taught. I spent a full year studying with her husband, David Euler - and I have spent more than 8 years now putting her style of acupuncture into extensive use every day in my clinic. So I am happy to help out if you have any questions about putting it all together in practice.
