Dyslexia

Has anyone come across dyslexia in their practice? Any ideas on etiology, diagnosis, and treatment options?

One common misconception
One common misconception made about dyslexia is that dyslexics write words backwards or move letters around when reading. In fact, this only occurs in a very small population of dyslexics. Dyslexic people are better identified by writing that does not seem to match their level of intelligence from prior observations. Additionally, dyslexic people often substitute similar-looking, but unrelated, words in place of the ones intended (what/want, say/saw, help/held, run/fun, fell/fall, to/too, etc.). curt CA Air Jordan 2 Shoes
Dyslexia
Hello,
From a TCM point of view, my chinese tutor said there was no concept for dyslexia in China.
From a personal point of view, my dyslexic symptoms were helped with educational kinesiology, and cranial therapy. I think this is because the probable cause of my symptoms were a severe concussion as a child.
my symptoms have returned, although not as severly, since a further head injury 4 yrs ago.
So I suppose from a TCM perspective it would be important to establish the cause of dyslexia, congenital, pathogenic, traumatic. In my case it responds to clearing stagnation in the channels, maybe for others it is kidney deficiency, or accumulation of damp etc.
Dyslexia and Chinese Medicine
Hello Helen
I am interested in your experience with Dyslexia. I have done some reading and have not found any conclusive western medicine explanation, only possible theories.
If you can pass along any information for me about Dyslexia relating to a kidney pattern I would appreciate it.
Dyslexia is something I only have minimal experience with in my practice and have not seen much of a kidney connection. I will search a little closer next time and see what I can find.
Thanks Helen
Ryan
Acupuncture and Dyslexia
Dyslexia is connect with a number of disorders all connected to the inner ear in western medicine, and therefore the Kidney meridian in TCM. Fear is the motivating emotion in this disorder, which again points to fear. I would think about balancing the K meridian, using Kidney herbal tonics.
Dyslexia and acupuncture
From a Western perspective, Dyslexia is caused by neurological defects in the brain. Some studies connect the defects to a gene variations that disrupt the normal formation of brain circuits that are necessary for fluent reading.
I think that acupuncture might be useful as an adjunct in therapy to help strengthen key brain regions. For instance, a needle at Du 20 while the child is in therapy practices letters that he has trouble with. Here are a few exercises to try while using acupuncture - http://www.dyslexia-parent.com/hints.html
Chinese Medicine and Dyslexia
I'm interested to see if anyone has "diagnosed" dyslexia. I am a graduated Doctor of Chinese Medicine and Dyslexic (or as I like to call it - Lexdysic) so I have a special interest in this thread.
I don't believe Dyslexia by itself will have a Chinese Medicine treatment. I think when Dyslexia is combined with other signs and symptoms such as poor concentration, poor memory, ADD, ... then Chinese Herbal medicine and Acupuncture can help.
Anyone else have any thoughts ?
