Great Scholar

I was doing a little research on Blood invigorating herbs today reading Obstetrics and Gynecology by Giovanni Maciocia.
Obstetrics & Gynecology in Chinese Medicine

On page 102 he discusses Yu Jin Tuber Curcumae, he discusses the usual blood invigorating characteristics but mentions that it has a very strong effect on the mind. He says Yu Jin Calms the mind, opens the orifices and is especially useful in cases of depression.

Has anyone had any experience using this herb in cases of blood stasis depression patterns or where I can find out more about this feature of Yu Jin ?

Here is some info on Yu Jin, doesn't mention the effect on the mind

Yu Jin and the mind

Hey Ryan,

I have been using Yu Jin for depression for a couple years now and find it a very useful herb to include in mental-emotional cases with Qi and/or blood stasis. To be honest with you, I usually forgot to use it for anything else but depression. Most Chinese books mention the depression resolving effects of Yu Jin and Jiao Shu-De mentions this as well in his 10 lectures on the use of medicinals book (which I think is one of the more useful materia medicas out there).

Hope this helps,

Eran

Yu Jin and mind calming

I too use Yu Jin to calm the mind, particularly in women who suffer with irritablitlity and/or depression in the days leading up to their menses. Yu Jin invigorates the blood and also cools heat that has accumulated via stagnation, hence why it is good for Pre-menstrual issues.

The combination of cooling and invigorating blood makes for good mind calming abilities, ensuring that the mind is receiving proper nourishment via an uninhibited circulation and that factors like heat which which may be harassing the mind are cleared.

Other herbs of similar natures can have the same effect to varying degrees- Dan Shen, Ling Xiao Hua, Chi Shao, Mu Dan Pi. All these herbs have the ability to calm the mind when used appropriately.

Shu De Jiao

Hi Ryan,

you said in the "Yu Jin" forum, that the Shu De Jiao is the best Materia Medica. I saw at Blue Poppy, a copy of that book (1) of about 700 pages, and I saw at Redwings' three copy with the same name but three books and 1600 something pages.

Which one is THE one.

Thank's

Jiao Shu-De

Hey Claudine,

I don't necessarily think that Jiao Shu-De's book is the best, but I do find it (and his other books to be very useful). Nonetheless, the book I mentioned is 10 Lectures on the use of medicinals and it is published by paradigm publications. He has 2 other books in english, one on formulas and one on pattern identification. All three of these books are incredible and regarded very highly in China. Jiao Shu De is a Lao Yi in China, meaning he is an old-time, very famous physician.

Get these books Claudine, you will be very happy.
