In today’s world we fail to see our connection to nature, thus
infertility among the people increases. In addition, while failing to see this
connection to nature, patients resort to aggressive measures offered by Western reproductive medicine. This includes costly tests, drugs and
surgeries that often are not able to solve the infertility involved. IVF
clinics’ statistics show that success with In Vitro Fertilization fluctuates
between 2%-40% depending on age groups. (7) This success rate reflects
solely the number of patients able to conceive and carry a pregnancy to
term. However it does not answer the question if, for the sake of future
generations, becoming pregnant in an unhealthy way is as good as
becoming pregnant through health? Current research has already shown
that smoking affects the health of a newborn. (8) Drinking alcohol during
pregnancy can affect a newborn too. (9) Another Dutch study showed that
pregnant women during the famine in World War II gave birth to children
and grandchildren with genetic abnormalities leading to diseases such as
cancer and diabetes. (10) In our ‘ever changing harmony’ it is
understandable that drinking and smoking will not be good. However,
understanding the importance of the ‘never changing harmony’ with
nature is somewhat more difficult for the modern mind. In nature a woman
ovulates one egg in one menstrual cycle. This corresponds to one lunar
cycle. However, what are the consequences if a woman produces 30 eggs
during one lunar cycle? What happens if the husband and wife don’t have
intercourse and yet the wife conceives, such as with IVF? What happens
when the wife conceives while suffering side effects from fertility drugs?
These questions cannot be answered by short-term statistics alone. Some
recent studies show anecdotal evidence suggesting consideration. A study
lead by Dr Laura A. Schieve found that 6.5 percent of singleton babies
born after fertility treatments weighed less than 5 pounds 8 ounces. Those
were pregnancies that went to term, meaning that early delivery was not
the cause of the low weights. In the general population only 2.5 percent of
babies delivered at term had weights that low. (11) Another Australian
study showed that the incidence of birth defects in babies conceived by
IVF and ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) was 9 percent as
compared to only 4.2 percent in the general population. (12) These studies
show problems with conventional fertility treatment immediately at birth.
Yet, they still do not show the impact 50 years later or two generations
later. Chinese medicine, being time tested, believes that restoring health
prior to conception is a good option for healthy future generations.
However, to solve infertility via ‘becoming healthy’ needs theoretical
foundation. Next I will present my pilot study and its results. Thereafter,
in the analysis, I will explain the theory behind the treatment, introducing
the classical Chinese medicine concept of infertility and its solution......."
